Trusting God
By: Kristen L. McNulty
Flipping over to Jeremiah 17:5-8, in the New Living Translation we read:
"This is what the LORD says: "Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans, who rely on human strength and turn their hearts away from the LORD. They are like stunted shrubs in the desert, with no hope for the future. They will live in the barren wilderness, in an uninhabited salty land. "But blessed are those who trust in the LORD and have made the LORD their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit."
So after reading this passage the question we all have to ask is, who am I trusting? Myself or someone else? Or is my trust firmly placed in God?
To answer that question let's talk about what it means to trust God.
Trusting God comes down to knowing and accepting that He can write a better story of our lives than we can. One that won't be free of pain or suffering or dark seasons, but one that will be full of grace and redemption and hope and joy and peace and life and ultimately, Christ.
Trusting God happens when we hand Him the pen and instead of trying to write the words, we instead look to Him and follow where He leads. As we walk through the wilderness and the valley and the desolate lands and the lands of plenty, we keep walking and following, instead of trying to take a path of our making.
Trusting God means giving yourself over to Him, day by day, moment by moment.
Trusting God is walking by faith not sight (2 Corinthians 5:7) and resting in His character and love, knowing He's not going to leave us alone for even one step on the journey (Deuteronomy 31:6).
Trusting God is the only way we as Christians can be true followers of Christ, because unless you trust, you won't fully follow or surrender.
Do you trust Him? When the storm rages? When the night gets dark? When the doubts creep in?
If the answer to that question is anything other than yes, it's time. God is patient and loving and forgiving, but you will never truly end up where you're supposed to be in His plans unless you trust Him enough to follow Him there. And you'll never know Him intimately and deeply until you choose trust, which is what close relationships are built on.
It's not complicated. It doesn't take preparation or having a PHd to do. It's a choice you make and then choose to re-make every day. Walking by faith and not by sight. Will you trust Him?
"The LORD is my strength and shield. I trust him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving. The LORD gives his people strength. He is a safe fortress for his anointed king." Psalm 28:7-8 NLT
